Over the past decade, electric power production in the United States has shifted away from coal to natural gas. Much attention has been paid to the greenhouse gas implications of this feedstock change, but less to the consequences of the concomitant non-GHG emissions changes. This project leverages the spatial quasi experiments created by the technology transitions associated with the shift from coal to natural gas to connect emissions changes to observed climate, crop, and mortality impacts. I integrate satellite observations and ground-based measurements to derive a more complete set of damage functions for our shifting energy sector.
