Working With Climate Data and Tools
Much of the climate change research to date is based upon complex and massive computer simulations largely inaccessible to the general public. But many government agencies are releasing datasets and scientific centers, including the Computation Institute’s Center for Robust Decision Making on Climate and Energy Policy (RDCEP), are creating user-friendly computational tools that open up climate and environmental data and modeling to researchers and policymakers. In this workshop, RDCEP researchers Michael Glotter and David Kelly will provide introductions to several resources and tools. They’ll discuss how to use weather data and climate model output in analyses of the impacts of climate change, and introduce participants to the new FACE-IT portal (faceit-portal.org), which provides access to the data and software needed to build analysis pipelines for research. Attendees will have the opportunity to work with data and use these tools to study the future of climate change and its impacts upon the economy, agriculture, and other sectors.

Recent years have brought an explosion of software and tools for working with data, making once arduous tasks such as processing, analysis, machine learning, and visualization easy and accessible. But as the data science toolbox grows larger and larger, it becomes harder to find the proper tool for the job at hand, not to mention how to get the most out of its use. “Discovery Engines: Under the Hood” is a new monthly workshop series organized by the Computation Institute, offering practical, hands-on instruction with new and popular computational tools. Learn from experienced users at CI research centers about programming libraries, web platforms, visualization software, and analytic techniques that can make a difference in your own projects.
