During this pandemic, we’ve all been asked to stay home—and for too many Americans, including thousands of Illinois residents, that has meant going without running water. Water shutoffs are a regular occurrence when households cannot pay their water bills. Though some cities, including Chicago, have issued moratoria on shutoffs, many have not. During this pandemic, many communities have been racing to turn water back on for households whose water was previously cut off—and policy makers have been discussing how to avoid these inequities in the future.
