As datasets continue to grow in size, it is becoming harder for many researchers in environmental sciences to access and analyze the data they need for their research. We describe how large scale clouds and commons of scientific data are beginning to play an important role in the research community. We also discuss some of the lessons learned over the past couple of years from the Open Science Data Cloud, the OCC-NASA Project Matsu and the OCC-NOAA Data Commons.
