The University of Chicago #CampusAsALab, Office of Sustainability, Program on Global Environment, #FrizzellSeries and many others will be hosting three fun-filled ZERO-WASTE events on campus on April 22nd–Earth Day. Events will take place at Stagg Field and the William Eckhardt Research Center. Plan to attend or to volunteer and receive free sustainable swag!
The events include:
1. UChicago’s first-ever daylong Zero-Waste Athletics Event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the first day of the two-day University Athletic Association’s Outdoor Track and Field Conference Championship Meet. Supported by UChicago’s Campus as a Lab Initiative, this event is the culmination of a year-long Environmental Studies student research project on ways to reduce waste generation and recover material for beneficial reuse. Through an application to collegiate sports and athletics, the event is designed to emphasize the connections of sports and the environment, as frameworks for promoting community engagement.
2. The University’s Office of Sustainability will host Earth Fest in the glass-enclosed north lobby of the newly-opened William Eckhardt Research Center (just southeast of Stagg Field) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Earth Fest is the University’s premiere event showcasing sustainable organizations, programs, and initiatives from the UChicago campus the local community, and Chicago. Earth Fest provides a fun, engaging experience for participants to learn more about sustainability initiatives and promote consideration of sustainability in everyday life. Healthy, sustainably-focused food will be provided.
3. In conjunction with the University of Chicago’s 2017 Zero-Waste Earth Fest activities, the Frizzell Memorial Series will be hosting Sam Kass for a conversation on food security, health, and youth. Mr. Kass will be interviewed by Monica Eng from WBEZ Chicago.
